10 Skincare Ingredients We'll Never Stock (And Why)

Transparency is everything. Here are the ingredients on our permanent blacklist โ€” and why we think they have no place in a modern skincare routine.

Our Standard

When we evaluate any product for the Wellness Wave range, we run the ingredient list through a strict filter. There are some ingredients we simply won't stock โ€” not because they're necessarily dangerous at low levels, but because safer, equally effective alternatives exist, and we think you deserve those instead.

1. Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben)

Parabens are preservatives that have been shown to mimic oestrogen in the body. While regulatory agencies consider them safe at low doses, they bioaccumulate โ€” meaning repeated daily use adds up. Given that effective paraben-free preservation exists, we see no reason to include them.

2. Synthetic Fragrance

"Fragrance" on an ingredient label can legally represent hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds. It's one of the most common causes of skin sensitisation and allergic reactions. We prefer unscented formulas or products scented only with disclosed essential oils.

3. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)

SLS is a harsh surfactant that strips the skin's natural moisture barrier. It's effective at creating foam, but foamy doesn't mean clean. For sensitive or dry skin especially, SLS can cause lasting disruption to barrier function.

4. Mineral Oil

Derived from petroleum, mineral oil forms an occlusive film on skin that blocks pores and can prevent effective absorption of other active ingredients. Better natural alternatives (jojoba, squalane, rosehip) exist that nourish rather than just coat.

5. Oxybenzone

Found in many chemical sunscreens, oxybenzone is a hormone disruptor that's also destructive to coral reefs. We recommend SPFs formulated with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide instead.
